Disability Insurance and Taxes

Individual disability insurance is not taxable if paid for with personal funds. If you pay your premiums with a personal account, you are using after tax dollars. At the time of claim, your disability insurance benefit will be paid tax free.

If your employer is paying the premiums on either your individual policy or through a group disability policy, your benefits paid to you will be taxable.

If you are a business owner and pay your individual disability benefits through your business and deduct the premiums, the benefits will be taxable. If you deduct your premiums on a business disability insurance policy, the benefits will be taxable, but will be offset by the deductible expenses you are using the benefits for at the time of claim.

When Should I Buy Disability Insurance?

by Jamie Fleischner, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF
President, Set for Life Insurance

Many clients and potential clients ask the question “when should I buy disability insurance?” The answer is that you should buy a disability policy before you need it. Just like any insurance, your insurance policy must be in force prior to your claim.

If your house is on fire, it is too late to run out and purchase fire insurance protection. The same holds true for disability insurance. No one ever knows when or if they will become too sick or injured to work. Therefore, it is critical to purchase a disability policy before anything happens.

Additionally, it is important to purchase your policy while you are health. Once you have an adverse health condition, disability insurance can be very difficult to acquire. I have had numerous people contact take their time thinking about their options until it is too late.  Just this week I followed up with a physician who had recently inquired about purchasing a disability policy. Unfortunately, last week he had a needle poke and is now HIV positive. He is now completely uninsurable for both life and disability insurance.

If you are thinking about purchasing disability insurance, don’t wait until it is too late.

Life Insurance: Do it for Love or Do It for Money

By Marvin H. Feldman

Agent’s Sales Journal Published 6/6/2011

A friend of mine who has a contract with Prudential recently sent me an ad he had received from them.  It was actually pretty good.  Directed toward agents rather than consumers, it listed thirty uses of life insurance and their respective support pieces for the agent’s use.  But the list of what life insurance can be used for would make an excellent one-page handout for our clients. So, here it is. (more…)
