Congratulations to this year’s medical students and medical residents who matched for 2015.

Here are some tips to help you navigate this year’s match when it comes to disability insurance:

1) Moving geographically. If you are moving from a less expensive state to a more expensive state (such as California, Florida or New York), it may be beneficial to purchase your policy prior to your move. If you are currently in a more expensive state and moving to a less expensive state, it may be in your best interest to wait to purchase your policy until you move. The rates are based on where you reside at the time of application and will never change, even if you move.

2) Discounts. See if you have discounts available at your current medical school or program (if they are not yet set up, Set for Life can help you arrange a new discount). If one is already available, you would need to submit your application prior to your graduation.

3) Changing medical specialties. Your policy is based on where you are at the time of claim and will cover you in your specialty at the time of application. If you are moving from a nonsurgical specialty to a surgical specialty, you can save approximately 20% on your premiums by purchasing your policy before the change. For example, if you are in a program for pediatrics or internal medicine and will be changing to cardiology, you would save 20% on your premiums by purchasing your policy ahead of time.
