As a stay at home mom, you work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without pay.

As such, you are not able to purchase a disability insurance policy.

To qualify for an individual disability policy, you must be working for pay. When you apply, it requires that you provide financial verification. Since you do not receive a pay check for your work, you are not able to protect yourself with an individual disability policy.

If you are currently working for pay and choose to later become a stay at home mom, you can keep your individual disability policy. Since there would be no income loss at the time of claim, you would most likely need to be totally disabled to qualify for benefits.
