What does it mean when disability insurance is offered at unisex rates?

Unisex rates are rates that are gender neutral and are the same for males and females.

Female rates are typically 40% more than male rates. Therefore, unisex rates favor females significantly. Some companies offer unisex rates and additional employer discounts which can equate to a total discount of 55%.

Unisex rates for men are actually more expensive than gender distinct rates. Therefore, if the unisex rate is not combined with an employer sponsored discount, it may not be beneficial.
