Disability Insurance:  When You Least Expect It

Last week I witnessed something that reminded me that sometimes things happen when you least expect it no matter how much you think you are prepared.

Every day I speak to people about the possibility of getting too sick or injured to work. Most people take reasonable precautions such as wearing a seat belt when driving or wearing a helmet when skiing. But what about when you least expect something to happen?

Last weekend I attended a Tae Kwon Do tournament where both my sons were competing in sparring. Before their match, they cover themselves in armor from head to toe. My youngest son had a particularly intense match. Kicks and punches were flying everywhere. This is part of sparring. When the match was over, they shook eachother’s hands and my son had a gold medal placed around his neck. This was the part as a parent where a let out a sigh of relief that he finished his match without getting hurt.

By the time my son ran up to the bleachers 10 minutes later to show me his medal, he showed me something else. He was so proud of his new medal that when he ran with it around his neck, it swung up and cracked his tooth. He was pretty upset but fortunately he wasn’t badly injured.

This situation made me stop and think about how many times we take precautions to try to be safe, yet when we have a brief lapse in judgment, everything can change. Or sometimes it is something completely out of our control. One would think the biggest risk was getting into a ring and getting punched and kicked. The biggest risk in fact was when he let his guard down, took his mouth guard out that he was the most vulnerable.

The majority of my clients who have had disability claims did not have something they could have ever imagined. I have had several clients who have had brain tumors who were in top physical condition. I had a client driving a new car with a defective tire that blew sending her car tumbling down a mountain. I’ve had clients get hit by drunk drivers. The fact is that there are a lot of factors out of our control that can cause a world of hurt. It is best to insure these risks since sometimes you just never know what to expect.
