Are You At Risk For a Disability?

202,886 and counting…

That’s the number of working-age Americans who have experienced a disabling illness or injury so far during May. And how do we know that? Check out America’s Disability Counter, the newest educational tool from the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) that dramatically illustrates the growing number of working-age Americans who experience a disability.

CDA’s recent consumer research study entitled “The Disability Divide” reported that while wage earners believe that a “disability can strike anyone at any time,” most deny the very real possibility that “a disability can happen to anyone”, could actually mean “it might happen to me.” In fact, most underestimate their disability risk by a factor of ten-fold or more. And few have a valid plan to provide an income should a disability strike. (more…)

Lessons From National Disability Insurance Awareness Month Apply Year-Round

Special to Sections of the ABA from the American Bar Endowment (www.abendowment.org) as printed May 16, 2011

Each year in March Lifehappens.org sponsors Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM), but the lessons from DIAM apply year-round, and may be important for ABA members to learn more about.

Just ask any financial advisor what risk could be called “the forgotten risk,” and, chances are, the answer will be disability. Their clients often ask whether they have too little, too much, or the right kind of life insurance, but rarely have they thought about how they could survive financially if their income stopped due to a disability. In reality, disability insurance is as important as (and in some cases, even more important than) life insurance. (more…)

2011 Disability Insurance Awareness Month Photo Contest

The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education will be using a photo contest to get consumers to think about the importance of insuring their paychecks.

LIFE, Arlington, Va., says it will offer a $500 gift card to the consumer who submits the best photo and caption for the “This Moment Made Possible by My Paycheck” contest.

The 2011 Disability Insurance Awareness Month public outreach campaign will start May 1. A photo contest microsite will take contest submissions throughout May, LIFE says.

LIFE started the Disability Insurance Awareness Month campaign to get consumers, employers and people in the insurance industry to think more about the importance of disability insurance.

The message of the 2011 awareness month campaign will be “Protect Your Paycheck,” LIFE says.

“This May, we want to get the message out that if you have a job and earn a paycheck, you need disability insurance,” says LIFE President Marvin Feldman.

In addition to sponsoring the photo contest, LIFE is putting a new consumer education website at http://www.protectyourpaycheck.org, and it is posting a disability insurance awareness kit for producers http://www.lifehappens.org/diamkit.

The spokesperson for the 2011 awareness month will be Rosemarie Rossetti, a woman whose life changed when a tree fell on her and paralyzed her while she was biking. Her disability insurance helped her keep going at a time when she could not work.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) Challenge: “Where Did My Paycheck Go?”

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) sponsored by the LIFE Foundation (Life Insurance Foundation for Education).

This month they will be hosting a challenge titled “Where did my paycheck go?!”

Your paycheck (or pay stub) arrives and you give it a good look and tuck it away, safe in the knowledge that this month your mortgage (or rent) will be paid and you will have enough for groceries, the cable bill, a night on the town …

You depend on your paycheck to pay for all these things-and more. So if suddenly you were unable to work due to an illness or injury, it’s important to know that you would have a source of replacement income to tide you over until you were able to return to work. That’s where disability insurance comes in. Think of it as insurance for your paycheck.
How to Enter

Throughout the month of May, the “Where Did My Paycheck Go” Challenge will be live on the LIFE Foundation page. At that time, you’ll be asked to take a few minutes to think about where all your hard-earned money goes, and how disability insurance can “protect your paycheck” in the event of a disabling illness or injury. At the end of the challenge, one entrant will be chosen at random to win a “bonus paycheck” in the form of a $1,000 American Express gift certificate.

Read the rules for eligibility here.

To go to the challenge, visit the LIFE Foundation website at http://www.lifehappens.org/paycheckchallenge.
