Guardian Reducing Disability Insurance Premiums for Surgical Specialists

Guardian Life Insurance Company announced today they are upgrading occupational classes for some surgical specialties. Until now, the medical occupations shown below have been classified as a 3M when they perform invasive procedures, while their non-invasive counterparts have been classified as a 4M.

Effective immediately, all of the occupations shown below will be classified as a 4M, reducing their rates by 15%.

Auto insurance? Check. Health insurance? Check. Home insurance? Check. Life Insurance? Check. Disability insurance? Er…not so fast. If you’re like most Americans — about two thirds — you’re about tapped out just covering your material possessions, paying student bills or saving for your kids’ future, maybe even putting a little away for retirement. You see disability insurance as a low-priority luxury.

According to a new survey from the nonprofit LIFE Foundation, only one in six working Americans (16 percent) consider their paycheck to be their most valuable asset. Are You At Risk For a Disability?

That’s the number of working-age Americans who have experienced a disabling illness or injury so far during May. And how do we know that? Check out America’s Disability Counter, the newest educational tool from the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) that dramatically illustrates the growing number of working-age Americans who experience a disability.

CDA’s recent consumer research study entitled “The Disability Divide” reported that while wage earners believe that a “disability can strike anyone at any time,” most deny the very real possibility that “a disability can happen to anyone”, could actually mean “it might happen to me.” In fact, most underestimate their disability risk by a factor of ten-fold or more. And few have a valid plan to provide an income should a disability strike. (more…)
