What is the difference between an agent and a broker when shopping for disability insurance?

When shopping for disability insurance, it is important to make the distinction between brokers and agents.

Agents are employees of insurance companies who represent that company’s products. Most insurance representatives fall into this category. If you contact an agent, they will most likely show you pne option–their company’s disability insurance product. Agents have incentives to show their company’s product and will most likely not shop around on your behalf. This is equivelant to going to car lot where they only sell one brand of cars. They will show you the features of that brand, but will not show you other brands. As a consumer, if you wish to compare policies and work with agents, you will need to contact agents from multiple companies and compare your options.

A disability insurance broker is not employed by an insurance company. They work on behalf of the client and can shop around to find the most suitable option for their client’s needs.  Most brokers represent multiple companies and can shop around to find the best fit.

Here at Set for Life, we are proud to work as brokers and shop around to find the best product and price to fit your needs. To request a quote and receive a personalized quote comparison, contact Set for Life today!
