When it comes to purchasing disability insurance, is it necessary to work with someone locally?

As an independent broker working with clients both locally and nationally, this question often arises. The answer is: it is not necessary to work with a local agent or broker. Other than the obvious advantage of meeting with someone personally and being able to build a rapport, there is no large difference otherwise.

At Set for Life, we work with clients from coast to coast on a daily basis. Furthermore, we process applications from in multiple time zones every day.

An existing client of mine called me recently with this question. She lives in Atlanta and purchased her policy with me while she was still in medical residency. She is now married and looking for insurance for her husband. A local agent told her that it would be advantageous to purchase their insurance through him since he can help her better at the time of claim. This argument is actually absurd. Claims are handled directly between the home office and the insured. The broker can help clients obtain the proper forms, but are not part of the claims process. Furthermore, the home office is also handled in an entirely different state as well.

With today’s technology, people are more connected than ever. This will only improve in the future. Therefore, it is more important to find the best broker who will offer the most objective advice offering quality products with the client’s best interest in mind. It may actually be an advantage to go other than local. For example, Set for Life offers discounts to physicians, dentists, medical residents, CRNAs and hospital employees around the country that are exclusive that may not be available if you go local.
