Most people assume that life insurance would not pay death benefits in the event of a suicide.

However, this varies from state to state. Most companies have a 1 year suicide clause. This means that if a suicide occurs within the first year of the policy, benefits would not be paid. Thereafter, suicide would be covered and benefits paid just like any other type of death.

Check with your broker to see what the law is in your state when you sign up for life insurance.
